about

We present an unusual and occasionally eerie audio artefact celebrating the pagan beauty of the megalithic relics of Anglesey, Wales in synth, song and (if you're up for it and have the room) interpretive dance.

“We bought an early 70s Tabbert Comtesse Caravan in North Wales from a couple who had intended to renovate it but never did. It was dusty, (mostly) watertight and home to the biggest house spider I've ever seen. There wasn't much left in the drawers and cupboards besides an ancient box of matches and a couple of teaspoons.

In the storage space under the bed though, was a box containing some mildewed Michael Moorcock and Susan Cooper paperbacks and a dozen or so cassette tapes by Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre. However, handwritten on one cassette was a name neither of us recognised; “Smaragdus - 4 Track Demos”. Inside the case, were what we can only assume to be track names. “Bodowyr”, “Lligy”, “Bryn Celli Ddu.” These were names we knew. Megaliths and ancient sites of Anglesey. Interest piqued, we pocketed the tape.

We don't know whether Smaragdus was a band or a solo artist; the occasional splash of female vocal being being the only hint at their identity. Internet searches have proven fruitless and any documentation that may have come with the caravan as to previous owners is long gone.

There's no date on the cassette but due to the brand of tape, the albums and books it was found alongside, together with the availability and affordability of 4 track portastudios, we believe it to be from the early to mid 80s.

If anyone knows who Smaragdus are, or were, please contact us."
